Now if you know me, you would know that tacos are my absolute favourite thing on this planet. I’m not talking about Taco bell or Mexican Chipotle Grill. I’m talking about the real deal – “verdadero negocio” “autentico!” . Not only are tacos incredibly tasty but the options are endless; grilled shrimp, deep fried cod, pulled pork, slow roasted steak. I could go on and on. Or I could share my favourite places to go here in the city of Toronto to get the tastiest tacos. I have an abundance of places, but these surpass the rest.
So lets “Tac-obout” it …
699 Danforth Ave
Tilde is serving articulately crafted bold-flavoured tacos that definitely pack a punch. With fusions like, West Indian and Korean. I knew the tacos had to be good at this midtown destination. They have a meat and potato taco that I can only describe as a mini roti, as well as delicious marinated Korean pork with crunchy slaw and avocado aioli. I also cannot forget the charred shrimp and crispy Bengali fish taco topped with coconut salsa. I wanted to try them all! Best thing is you can. They offer a platter “ all around the world” which includes 6 small tacos of your choice and a side. All for a small price of $23. Don’t forget to try one of their craft cocktails or beer and don’t leave without dessert….Churros 3 for $5!
198 Augusta Ave
I was in Kensington market for an event and this place happened to be next door, so I popped in to see what it was about. I quickly learned that it was a small Spanish market/taqueria. Offering locals imported Mexican vanilla, tortillas, salsa, corn chips and Spanish baked goods. Theymake simple ingredient tacos and serve cold imported cerveza. The los campechanos (grilled steak and Tortilleria chorizo)was amazing! Even serving a certified Canadian beef taco and vegetarian options. This place may be very simple and straightforward, but boy they are flavourful. I also recommend their fresh mango juice.
130 Eglinton Ave East
If you are ever looking for a quick fix for tacos on a budget, visit La Carnita. They serve a lunch menu from 1pm-4pm for only $15.99! It Includes 2 tacos of your choice, 1 side – salad, chips ‘n’ gauc, or Mexican street corn, and a dessert- churro or a paleta *bonus it comes from Sweet Jesus which is located within La Carnita. So you and your friends can grab ice cream afterwards. This places decor is modern with old school vibes. Playing throwback tracks like; Biggie, Mase, Nas, and Tupac. 90’s babies gather here for craft beer, cocktails and delicious tacos. Visit their other locations throughout the city. 501 College Street, 106 John Street, and 780 Queen Street East.
Mi’ Taco Taqueria
247 Queen St West
Located in the heart of downtown this place made my list for the simple fact that they make their own house made fresh tortillas every day, right in their store front window! This is one of the very few who do this, if not the only place. Their tacos are made hot fresh to order. The shrimp, carne asada and shredded brisket are my top picks. Did I mention all tacos are a cool $3.75 each! Also don’t forget to try their “Elote” mexican sweet corn and delicious gauc and chips.
933 St Clair Ave West
This is my favourite place. Located on St. Clair W this is as authentic as it gets. What I particularly attracts me to this place is its all over dedication to authenticity. Its like walking into a little piece of Mexico City located in Toronto. The décor is vibrant and the staff makes it all the better experience. I recommend start ing with the guacamole that’s served in a traditional rustic molcajet. The abundance of variety was over whelming for a taco lover, but I made some solid decisions with the alpastor , alambre and carnitas. It was not a disappointment. I even tried a tamale, which they are known for. Tastiest tamale I have ever had. My only regret is I didn’t order more tamales for only $6 each.
Although the above are my favourites I do want to add some honorable mentions:
